Curated by Amruta Nemivant, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore (IN), Colombo (LK), October 2024 - February 2025.
“The Goethe-Institut Mumbai is collaborating with the curatorial team of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg on a touring version of the feminist and multi-perspective exhibition Empowerment, conceived with the aim of bringing a selection of transnational positions into a more intensive dialog with artists, activists and discourses from India and the South Asian region. The project aims to initiate a multidisciplinary discourse on contemporary feminist practices in the arts, including perspectives from South Asia, Germany and other parts of the world. Through the project, the Goethe-Institut South Asia and its partners together with Sandbox Collective will expand and strengthen their networks with relevant actors and institutions related to the themes of the exhibition. At each station, Sandbox Collective will work specifically with local artists to create conversations about anti-discrimination in the context of the exhibition. The subsequent multidisciplinary program will address gender equality, women's rights and: LGBTQIA+ rights through art and cultural engagement and will include educational aspects for diverse audiences. It will be aimed at the general public, artists, art schools, educational institutions and civil society organizations, with a focus on women and queer people.
The two-year project will tour six different cities in India and South Asia. The tour will utilize the diverse and far-reaching cultural and civil society networks of the local Goethe-Instituts and Sandbox Collective to raise awareness of fundamental concerns and create a greater synergy between the various feminist dialogues in the region and beyond. The exhibition will be on display in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore in India and Colombo in Sri Lanka. Preparations for the tour will begin in January 2024 and by the end of March 2024, the tour will be ready to start with the first venue. The project will continue until December 2025.”
